Spring Valley may receive Economic Development Grant

Spring Valley could be receiving $265,000 from the State of Minnesota in the form of an Economic Development Grant. The money is a result an extension of the Rochester .5 percent sales tax. The citizens of Rochester approved the ballot question on November 6, 2012, authorizing that extension. The total amount of funds to be shared by 17 communities is $5,000,000. The Sales Tax Distribution Agreement is to be approved by the Legislature. The proceeds of the tax exempt bond issue provided to Spring Valley may only be used for capital costs directly related to an eligible economic development project. The term “Capital cost” includes architectural, engineering, legal and similar project costs.
Troy Lange spoke to the Council about the new bridge under construction as part of the trail system. He was appearing on behalf of the local snowmobile club and presented the Council with a $500 check toward the construction of the bridge. The snowmobile club was given the OK to use the bridge by the Council and Lange was thanked for their donation.
Reports were received from the department heads. Jim Cooper had a written report that summarized the activity in 2012. The ambulance had 454 calls in 2012, which is the same as the year before. Currently there are 23 EMTs and two First Responders on staff. The recruitment of volunteers continues to be an issue.
Chad Hindt reported that the street department has been busy keeping the streets clear of ice and snow.
The Library report given by Dianne Swenson-Sikkink noted that Don Rose retired from the board. Bill Rowen and Shirley Gangstad as President and Vice President.
Park Director John Fenske said that the 3rd and 4th grade basketball ended Saturday. This year there was a total of 25 girls and 50 boys that took part.
Policy Coordinator Tim Rasmussen told the council that the new squad car has been ordered. He also handed out a report for the month showing the activity of the Sheriff’s department in Spring Valley.
Fire Chief Chris Czapiewski informed the council that they had responded to one call this month. The calls during 2012 totaled 31.
