Lanesboro Arts Center exhibit “Traditions in Transition: The Art of Redefined” runs Feb. 9 through March

Lanesboro Arts Center opens the 2013 Exhibition Gallery season with an exhibit showcasing work by nationally-acclaimed, award-winning Lanesboro jewelers Liz Bucheit and Michael Seiler. “Traditions in Transition: The Art of Jewelry Redefined” opens on Saturday, February 9 with a public artist reception from 6-8 p.m. at the Lanesboro Arts Center in Lanesboro, Minn. Free to the public and handicapped accessible, the exhibit will run through March 30, 2013. In the exhibit, each artist redefines the context in which we interpret the art of adornment. Bucheit lifts traditional Scandinavian filigree out of its historical roots and fashions fresh contemporary pieces. Seiler invites the viewer into his artistic process by pairing his original poetry with each finished jewel. Both artists combine 2D full color broadside images in conjunction with the jewelry displayed to represent how the work “works” not just on the body but also as artworks themselves. The exhibit is sponsored by Inspire(d) Media, and presented in cooperation with the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council, Inc. through funding from the Minnesota State Legislature and the McKnight Foundation.

Liz Bucheit creates jewelry and body adornment inspired by Scandinavian folklore and myth. A goldsmith for over 30 years, she holds a Master’s degree in metalworking and jewelry from the University of Iowa, Iowa City and has trained in traditional jewelry and metalworking techniques both in Ireland and Norway. Liz has won numerous design competitions and has been awarded grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board, the McKnight Foundation, Sons of Norway, and the SE Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC). She has exhibited in museums and cultural centers and her bridal tiaras and wedding jewelry are in numerous collections.

Liz is an active speaker on the topic of Norwegian filigree work and conducts workshops and classes on jewelry design and fabrication. She owns and operates Crown Trout Jewelers in Lanesboro, Minn.

Michael Seiler is a goldsmith and jewelry designer in Lanesboro, Minn. and has been working in the metal arts since 1995 mastering the techniques of fabrication, stone setting, wax carving, stone cutting and stone inlay work. He has worked with a number of prominent local designers as well as instructed metal working classes in Minnesota including Minnetonka Center for the Arts and the North House Folk School in Grand Marais. Michael is a recipient of the McKnight Established Artist Grant from SEMAC. His jewelry designs were recently exhibited at the Dahl Center for the Arts, Rapid City SD. His goals are to create new and innovative techniques in stone setting and ring design combining lapidary and metal work, and to bring the imagination of his original poetry into a solid form that can be touched, held and worn.
