Lanesboro School Board hears about Ag in Motion

Ashley Bue, a senior at Lanesboro High School, gave a presentation to the school board about the Ag in Motion trip she went on with other local high school students this past summer.
Ag teacher Tim Willette said this was the third year for Ag in Motion. The students were given an agenda, assignments, and laptops, and it is a chance for them to ear a half Ag credit.
Bue went on a trip to northern Minnesota camping, so they did not have laptops, but they had assignments they worked on. Their trip was four days, and she went with other kids in FFA from local schools. The first day they went to the Como Zoo in St. Paul, then drove to Duluth.
According to Bue, they walked the pier, toured the aquarium, went whitewater rafting in Carlton, and visited Itasca State Park. They tested the headwaters of the Mississippi in a lab event, had a picnic lunch, then had a lesson in archery, something Bue had never tried before. They also had an Amazing Race event where they rode ten miles on bike, had exploration time, a cookout supper, trust games, and camping.
“It was a smaller group than last year,” said Bue, who had gone on a trip to Wisconsin in 2011. She said this coming summer they will be going to Missouri and Illinois, and she would like to go even if she doesn’t get any credits for it.
“The number of friends I have made is amazing,” shared Bue.
There was a question from the board about expenses, and Willette said the FFA Chapter paid half last year. This year because of camping, the costs were down a little, at $250 per student.
Willette also updated the board on the greenhouse project. He said the structure is up and the roof is halfway done. There is power to the building now. There is grant money that can only be used to purchase the things inside the greenhouse, such a furniture. Willette said they are researching fundraiser opportunities for the greenhouse to be involved in, such as possibly selling hanging flower baskets.
“We are on track, and our goal is to get it up and running as soon as possible,” said Willette.
Organization
New council members Terri Scott and Christine Troendle were sworn in.
Dave Ruen will continue to be the Chairperson, Dave Lawstuen the Vice Chair, Lolly Melander the Treasurer and Steve Snyder the Clerk.
Committee assignments were chosen and approved.
The Republican-Leader will remain the legal paper for the district, and Associated Bank the official depository. Richard Nethercut is the official legal counsel, and the board meeting schedule will remain the same.
Salaries for board members, which have not been changed since 2007, will remain the same.
A contract for Kammy Highum was approved for kitchen employment.
