Luther College to host fourth Oneota Film Festival Jan. 18-20

DECORAH, Iowa – The fourth annual Oneota Film Festival has announced that it will present 10-15 sets of films including international award winners, as well as panel discussions with filmmakers, specialists and experts. The fourth annual event, which focuses on the critical issues of our time, is set for Jan. 18-20, hosted by Luther College.
The 2013 festival showcases several films: "Elemental," the story of three unique individuals confronting ecological issues; "Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare;" "Not Yet Begun to Fight," the story of a Vietnam veteran who reaches out to a new generation returning from war; "Watershed: Exploring a New Water Ethic for the New West;" "We're Not Broke," the story of seven Americans who seek justice from corporations; and "Where the Yellowstone Goes" a film that follows a 30-day drift boat journey down the longest undammed river in the lower 48 states.
This year's films also include, "A Girl and a Gun," "Bones Brigade," "Into Eternity" and "The World Peace Game," among others.
There is no charge for admission to the films, however participants are encouraged to pre-register online at http://oneotafilmfestival.com/register/. All seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Although registration is required for admission to screenings, it does not guarantee admission. Registration will also be held the day of the event at a table in the lobby of Valders Hall of Science on the Luther campus. Registrants receive a wristband, which is needed to get into the film showings.
The films are intended to generate discussion of local initiatives related to critical issues, and highlight an overall look at the community's potential for developing and maintaining a more independent and sustainable local economy. Festival organizers are planning 10-15 sets of films and panel discussions with filmmakers and other specialists and experts.
A filmmakers' reception for Oneota Film Festival members will take place at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at T-Bock's Sports Bar and Grill, followed by a concert featuring the dynamic Tani Diakite and the Afrofunkstars at 8 p.m. at the Hotel Winneshiek Steyer Opera House in Decorah. The concert is open to the public with a $10 admission fee at the door, $8 for Oneota Film Festival members.
Oneota Film Festival is a nonprofit corporation formed by local film enthusiasts, representatives of Luther College and Decorah Public Library. Oneota Film Festival is presented and hosted by Luther College and sponsored by the Oneota Community Food Cooperative.
