Velma Mae Jones
Velma Mae Jones was born on February 24, 1912, and died at the age of 100 years and nine months on December 12, 2012, at the Golden Living Center in O’Neill, Nebraska.
Velma was the daughter of Lee and Vella (Traver) Young and was born in Pauline, Iowa. Velma was the eldest child, having three sisters and two brothers. As children growing up, their parents had a General Store. Velma had developed a love for sweets; chocolate was her favorite.
It was at the store where she met her first husband, Ralph Calif; they were married in 1935. To this union three sons were born, Avon, Rodney and Eugene. During these years, she not only raised a family, but also did gardening, canning of vegetables, raised and milked goats and raised chickens.
In 1968, Ralph died, and in 1969 she married Gerald Jones. In 1993, she moved from Minnesota to Stuart, Nebraska and in 1996, she then moved to Bassett, Nebraska. Later in 1996, she moved to the Golden Living Center and resided there until her death.
Survivors include a son Eugene (Betty Joe) Calif of Long Pine, Nebraska; one granddaughter, Velma Mae Calif of Greenbush, Minn, step-sons Kenneth (Nancy) Jones of Cherokee, Iowa; Maynard (Marlys) Jones of Rochester, Minnesota; Roger (Arlene) Jones of Independence, Kentucky; Jason Jones of Mantorville, Minn.; and Steven Jones of Harmony, Minn.; 21 step-grandchildren; 39 step-great-grandchildren and eight step-great-great-grandchildren.
Velma was preceded in death by her two husbands; brothers; sisters, and their spouses; and her two sons, Avon and Rodney; and step-daughter Janet Johnson.
Memorial services will be held at a later date and internment in the Stuart Cemetery. Hoch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
