A 39-year-old Canton man is in custody after a shooting in Preston. A 49-year-old Preston woman was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was in surgery at the time the news release was being prepared.
According to Fillmore County Sheriff Daryl Jensen, the woman was shot inside a residence in Preston at approximately 12:20 pm today (December 21, 2012). Jensen said that there was at least one other person present who witnessed the shooting and was able to tell responding officers who the shooter was.
At approximately 1:00 pm, the suspect was spotted by a Rushford Officer eastbound on Hwy #16 between Whalan and Peterson. The Rushford Officer pursued the suspect into Winona County where Winona County, Houston County and Minnesota State Troopers assisted. The suspect stopped east of Wilson in Winona County and was taken into custody after a 30 minute standoff.
Fillmore Central Schools were locked down during the incident. Sheriff Jensen said that although Officers knew who the suspect was, there was a 40 minute span where his whereabouts were unknown.
The investigation is being done by the Preston Police Department, Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
