Posted in Agriculture

A U of M Dairy SCC Field Day will be held on Wednesday, July 28, 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon at Udder Valley Dairy (Peter & Teri Rosendahl), Spring Grove. Directions: From west end of Spring Grove at the intersection of MN Hwy 44 and Co. Rd 4, drive south on Co. Rd 4 for 1.75 miles. Farm is on the left.

The U of MN Dairy Team will be conducting a number of Dairy SCC Field Days around the state this summer. The objectives of the field days are: 1) to discuss the new European Union requirement that individual dairy farms selling milk to processors exporting dairy products need to be below 400,000 SCC (Somatic Cell Count) beginning October 1, 2010; and 2) to provide information to help producers to not only meet the 400,000 limit, but to also discuss management practices that can lower herd SCC, whatever the present level, and increase milk quality premium.

Registration for the field day begins at 9:15 a.m. No pre-registration is required. Handout materials will be available and plastic boots will be furnished for everyone to wear. Refreshments will be available during registration. No luncheon is involved.

The featured speaker will be Dr. Jeff Reneau, U of MN Professor of Dairy Management. Dr. Reneau's expertise in mastitis control, milk quality and dairy management are well known in the dairy industry throughout the country.

Udder Valley Dairy had a 118,000 SCC average on 201 cows in 2009. The operation has a 16-cow step up parlor with rapid release. The free-stall barn has 155 stalls with sand bedding.
