Lanesboro City Council hears library report

Tara Johnson and David Hennesey spoke to the Lanesboro City Council at their regular meeting on November 5 and gave their quarterly report about the public library.

Johnson said this summer there were 21 programs at the library, including story time, performers, and walk-abouts. There were 623 kids that attended those programs, and 50 that participated in reading programs.

Johnson thanked the city for the new sign outside the community center directing people to the library, as it has been very helpful. Krista Flaig, an art teacher at Lanesboro Schools, spoke about the mural that she would be having some art students paint this winter in the library. She described it as a “splash of color” with words and pictures.

Hennesey spoke and said he was very pleased with the direction the library is going this year.

“As of September 30, our circulation was 21,611, which is better than the entire circulation of 2010, and 2011,” said Hennesey.

Hennesey also talked about the 380 volunteer hours that have been put in over the year, and more hours for reading and other things.

Council member Ceil Allen thanked them for all of their hard work at the library, and Hennessey thanked the city for all of their support.

Lodging Tax Ordinance

City Attorney Tom Manion spoke to the council about the current lodging tax ordinance, and how it may need revamping. They have had the lodging tax ordinance in place for a long time, but there has been no real clear way to enforce it.

Manion said there’s an integrity component, and they want to be reassured they are doing their job enforcing this. He said they could check with other cities that have a similar ordinance and see how they manage it.

The council authorized City Administrator Bobbie Vickerman and Manion to look over the ordinance for accuracy and compliance.

Lanesboro Museum

Sandy Webb from the Lanesboro Museum was at the meeting to talk about how the museum has been doing, and to thank the city for their support. She said she has received a lot of compliments about the museum and what they have displayed there, and that it shows a real sense of community.

Turkey Bowling

Parkway Pub owner Vince Jeannette requested and received permission to close two parking spots outside of the pub for the annual Turkey Bowling event on November 21. Jeannette said there is a new addition to the event this year, as Rhinos will be hosting Chicken Bowling for kids from 3:30-5:30. Turkey Bowling will take place from 5:30-10:30pm.

Jeannette said this is the ninth year of the event, and they have raised $16,105 for senior classes at Lanesboro High School over the years. They are hoping to raise some money for the elementary school with the Chicken Bowling.

Other Business

The city offices will be closed on November 12, 22, and 23.

The council gave Vickerman permission to pursue a Heritage Preservation Commission Fast Track grant.

The council approved paying two employees for the comp time they have accrued, and changed the personnel policy to get rid of comp time, as they will pay overtime instead.

The council also approved the following items:

•A liquor license for the card tournament and bean bag tournament at the Joe Rodgers benefit on November 17.

•Smith Schaffer for the 2012 audit

•The appointment of Autumn Johnson to the ambulance crew

•The 2013 liquor licenses

•2012 Assessments for mowing to be presented to the county

•Creating a handicap parking spot in front of the bank

•Writing a letter to the county commissioners thanking them for looking at the frac sand mining issue, to go along with the Chamber’s letter
