Visit Historic Forestville on Aug. 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for "Pickle It Day." Assist the gardeners in picking the fattest, plumpest and most beautiful garden vegetables, including: peppers, cucumbers, beets, onions, cabbage and other heirloom varieties, all traditionally found in Thomas Meighen's garden. Then, help clean and process the vegetables using 19th-century pickling methods for food preservation.
The activities are included in the historic site's regular admission of $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and college students, and $4 for children ages 6-17. Children under age 5 are admitted free. A state park vehicle permit or daily admission is required to enter Forestville State Park. For more information, call 507-765-2785.
At Historic Forestville, visitors can see 19th-century merchandise in the Meighen family store, discover what's cooking in the kitchen and help the hired hand with chores in the garden and farm buildings. The historic village is located inside Forestville State Park, between Preston and Spring Valley, approximately 40 miles from Rochester or Austin.
