Rep. Greg Davids receives Minnesota Ambulance Association Award

(Spring Valley, MN) State Representative Greg Davids (R-Preston) was recently presented with the ambulance industry’s prestigious “Legacy Award” for his record of strong support for rural Emergency Medical Services policies at the Minnesota Legislature.
Davids’ legislative record of bipartisan cooperation on maintaining a strong rural EMS system prompted the award. His commitment has resulted in successful enactment of creation of a network of tax exemptions for all ambulance providers in Minnesota. However, his advocacy for programs primarily benefitting rural, volunteer ambulance providers has been crucial in maintaining rural EMS. He was also instrumental in the creation of an independent EMS regulatory authority as well as a first-in-the-nation recruitment/retention plan to help secure volunteer ambulance personnel in Minnesota.
EMS spokesperson Buck McAlpin stated that “without the numerous tax considerations and volunteer personnel policies championed by Rep. Davids, the brittle network of rural, volunteer ambulance providers in Minnesota would be in dire straits.” He continued, “although these exemptions represent a very small portion of the state budget, small amounts of money go a long way towards supporting our statewide volunteer ambulance operations which represent nearly 62 percent of all EMS personnel in Minnesota.”
Davids was recognized in a formal ceremony in Spring Valley. During his comments on the award, he recounted how the Spring Valley Ambulance Service, through its professionalism and timely response to a 911 call, saved the life of his father. “Had it not been for these dedicated Emergency Medical Technicians, my father would never have survived,” Davids said.
Volunteer ambulance personnel represent the vast majority of all certified ambulance personnel in Minnesota. The loss of these volunteers would cost Minnesota’s healthcare system roughly $70 million in additional healthcare costs per year. Davids’ leadership and advocacy have made him a true hero to rural EMS.
