Local Give to the Max Day challenge

Coming up on November 15 is an important day for Minnesota non-profit organizations that are looking for donations. Give to the Max Day is a special day for anyone to go online to donate money to any of these organizations, and there are incentives for doing so.

According to Sheila Craig, board member of the Preston Area Community Foundation, this is one day made for people to give online to their favorite charity. To make things interesting, and to promote the event, the Spring Valley Area Community Foundation has challenged the Preston Area Community Foundation to see who can raise the most money that day.

There are incentives and awards for any organizations to push for donations during the 24-hour period from midnight on November 15 through midnight on November 16. Grants are available for schools and non-profit organizations, and matching funds in certain cases. GiveMN.org is making it very easy for anyone to go online and use a credit card to make a minimum $10 donation.

Craig explained that Miken Sports of Caledonia is also helping out with the local fundraising efforts by donating softball and baseball bats and sports bags. “I am told they are pretty exclusive, expensive bats,” said Craig. “There are no losers, but the city that receives the least amount of funds will be presenting the bats to the other side.”

The bats and sports bags will then be donated to the school district on the winning side. Craig explained that the city with fewer donations will still get some equipment donated for their school.

The Preston and Spring Valley Area Community Foundations are under the umbrella of the Southern Minnesota Initiative Fund (SMIF). They have contributed many donations to their communities and schools over the years. Craig explained that the money they are trying to raise with the Give to the Max Day will go to increase their endowment fund, allowing them to give more to local organizations and schools.

According to Craig, the Preston Area Community Foundation donates an average of $4,000 a year through their endowment fund.

Awards and sports equipment will be presented at the “winner’s” home basketball game on December 18 in Preston or January 4 in Spring Valley.
