Fillmore Central passes on Special Ed. consortium

At the regular Fillmore Central School Board meeting, Superintendent Richard Keith informed the board about a request from a southern Minnesota special education consortium to join with the district.
According to Keith, it is sometimes difficult for the small districts to find psychologists and speech pathologists, and they often have to share services with other schools. Right now, Fillmore Central does have a speech pathologist.
Keith said that joining forces with the consortium has certain risks, including financial ones. There is also the possibility that they would have to share the speech pathologist and have for less time.
Michelle Breitsprecher, Special Ed. Director, was asked if she thought joining would solve any of their problems with staffing difficulties.
“It may make it stronger to find things, but does it solve everything? No,” replied Breitsprecher.
Chairperson Ross Kiehne said the district is always open to creative ways to work with other small districts, but they also have to look at what makes sense.
Keith also added that the Root River Program, which is currently a Fillmore Central program, could become a consortium program, and there is the potential it would be moved to a more central location.
It was agreed amongst board members that the special ed. arrangement with Kingsland is working well, and they did not feel the need to continue discussion with the consortium.
Personnel
The board approved rescinding the hire of ECSE Paraprofessional Jessica Marzolf, and approved the hire of Kelly Jo Dornink for that position.
The resignation of Katie Gilman, daycare paraprofessional, was approved. The resignations of Aubrey Johnson and Ashley Case were also approved.
The hires for extra-curricular staff were approved, including Joseph Cullen for assistant wrestling; Alan LaFluer, assistant wrestling; Domingo Kingsley, seventh grade girls basketball; John O’Connor, 9th grade girls basketball; and Jackie Whitacre, speech and one act play.
Other Business
The board approved the sale of a baler that is in the boiler room at the high school that is no longer in use. They also approved the sale of the 12-passenger van, as there is a state law that schools can no longer have 12-passenger vans.
The board approved the Literacy Plan, which is done every year. Once it is approved, it is available on the school website for anyone to read. Principal Heath Olstad said there were several team members that worked together on the plan.
The board approved bids for snow removal from JD Snow Plowing for the Harmony site and Mensink Landscaping in Preston. They also approved bids from TNT Lawn Service for lawn mowing.
The board also approved the following items:
•A resolution authorizing general obligation alternative facility bonds to pay for the high school HVAC project in the spring.
•The reimbursement resolution, which allows the district to pay for the project up front and be reimbursed when the bonds go through
•Two open enrollment requests
•The staff seniority list
