Local residents weigh in on the proposed marriage amendment

Personally, I don’t think we should be voting on this issue, there are way too many other issues that are more important. Like focusing on who do we really want to run this country and who do we really want to represent our Great State of Minnesota- where we have chosen to live.

I am a Christian, I believe in God, Jesus, and his word (the Bible). In the Bible in Genesis 2, God created Adam, he didn’t want him to be lonely so he created animals. This wasn’t good enough for Adam, so he made Eve with a rib from Adam so that he would have a perfect partner, a wife. Genesis 2:24 “This explains why a MAN leaves his FATHER and MOTHER and is joined to his WIFE, and the two are united into ONE.”

To me, God has made the definition of marriage quite clear and obvious. He made us to be fruitful and multiply – it is only possible for a man and a woman to create a baby – a precious gift from God. In Genesis 19 God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because the men in town wanted to have an intimate relationship with other men. When I searched for the definition of marriage in the Bible, every place referred to it as a relationship between a man and a woman.

Because of my faith and what God and Jesus have done for me, I will vote Yes.

I will be voting no on the marriage amendment. I think it’s terribly important for a number of reasons. For one, I don’t think our government should be in the business of legislating who people can love. I feel that marriage is a right that the majority enjoy and it should be extended to everyone.

People don’t know what they’re voting on. People don’t understand. This vote is not about making same sex legal or not. This vote is about putting in the constitution of the state that it will be here and forever be a man and a woman. Many voters don’t know that same sex marriage is currently illegal in Minnesota. It’s shutting the door on any future conversation. Separate is not equal, it never will be.

We’ve learned this really was an issue brought to the table to polarize, separate and incite voters. It’s discrimination in the true sense of the world.

In Genesis 2:18, the Bible says a man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home. It says “literally” they will become one flesh. It also says marriage is for procreating. It was not good for man to be alone, so he made woman.

I believe that God’s law is above Man’s law, and that’s why I’m voting Yes.

I am voting no because I have given the subject of homosexuality thought for many many years. I’m married to a minister so for a long time thought it was a wrong thing or a sinful thing, In my heart I couldn’t buy it. I did a lot of thinking and reading. I read a book about a Mormon man who had tried to be straight and had a family. It hit me over the head that this man was born this way, he didn’t choose to be a homosexual, he did all he could do couldn’t’ change himself. Then I thought – why did I think anybody would choose to be gay? I have four sons. What if one of them said they were gay, how would I feel about it? Whoever they are, that’s who they are. I cannot imagine in a democracy telling people they can’t get married. We all want equal treatment, what kind of country is this?

It also occurs to me that the gay community has been at risk from disease- AIDS for sure in part because they’ve always had to hide their relationships. The result is these people are less vulnerable to the diseases.

Giving them the privilege of marriage is putting them less at risk because they don’t have to hide their lifestyle, who they are. Absolutely for the good of our society and the good of homosexuality.

Christ said "give unto Caesar what is Caesar's" meaning there is a difference between God's law and the laws of man, and there should be. Christians spent thousands of years killing each other, and killing Jews, and claiming that they were doing in the name of God. Our founding fathers preached tolerance and a separation of church and state so that we could all get along. Because of this tolerance, people who want to be fundamentalist Christians and live their lives that way have the right to do so. These same people should respect the rights of other not to do so. If you're religious beliefs tell you that homosexuality is a sin, then you are free not to practice it. At the same time, however, it is none of your business telling someone else how to live his or her life or whom that person can and cannot marry.
