A group of Ladies in Lanesboro wanted to help children and the rest, as they say, is history. Or, at least it will be, after the weekend of November 2, 3, and 4, 2012. The GETFRESH Girl’s Weekend is for women to do what they like to do: shopping, eating, drinking, music, theatre, yoga, and much more. The fact that the Girl’s weekend takes place during deer hunting season is not a happenstance, as the flyer for the weekend states, “While the hunters are away…the girls will play!”
And how, you may ask, does this benefit children and families? The answer to that question is Family & Children’s Center of Winona. Julie Charlebois (Riverside on the Root), Pam Watson (Brewster’s Red Hotel), and Sue Whitney (GETFRESH Vintage) had come up with the idea for the event and called another friend, Marlene Kohner, who is an advocate for children in Winona, asking for advice on where the proceeds would be best put to use to help children. Marlene got involved with the Girl’s Weekend and recommended the Family & Children’s Center of Winona to receive the proceeds. The group toured the facility and learned of the broad services the Center provides not only to children but to families.
On the website for the Family & Children’s Center, (www.fcconline.org), it is stated that “Family and Children’s Center provides a wide range of highly effective, life-changing prevention and intervention programs designed to strengthen families and promote individual well-being, in good times and in bad.” The Center offers services to help families deal with a wide array of issues including, but not limited to, drug abuse, sexual abuse, suicide, bullying, ADD, ADHD, and foster care advocacy. Family & Children’s Center of Winona is the largest private provider of human services in Western Wisconsin and Southeastern Minnesota. The center helps all of southeastern Minnesota, including families from Fillmore County.

The Fashion Show will be emceed by Mike Charlebois and Sue Whitney and features items provided by Olivia’s Attic, Amish Experience, Windy Mesa, Crown Trout Jewelers, and GETFRESH Vintage and will feature new fashion with vintage accessories. There will also be a luncheon at the fashion show catered by Riverside on the Root.
The founders of the GETFRESH Girl’s Weekend have certainly planned a very busy and fun getaway for women, while bringing customers to Lanesboro businesses during a slow time of the year, and did all of this while benefiting children and families. Sounds like a win, win, win situation!
