E. Douglas Richards, 83, of Harmony, MN died peacefully on Monday October 22, 2012 at the Heritage Grove in Harmony, MN. He was receiving care from Mayo Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 26, 2012 at 11 a.m. the Harmony Methodist Church in Harmony. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Elliota Cemetery in rural Canton, MN. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Doug was born on May 19, 1929 in Paris, Texas, to Eber and Thelma (Hull) Richards. He graduated from Paris High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy and later served as a corpsman with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA, where he met his wife Arlys Casterton. They married on July 21, 1950. He was deployed shortly thereafter to serve in Korea. After leaving the service, he rejoined his wife in Paris, Texas. He attended North Texas State Junior College. They moved to Harmony in 1953 where Doug opened the Red Owl Store. He retired from Fairway Foods in 1990.
Following retirement, Doug and Arlys enjoyed many winters in Texas. He was proud to be a Texan, even when displaced to the North. Doug was an avid golfer and often enjoyed telling the stories of his four holes in one.
He is survived by his son Doug (Vivian) of Lake Mills, IA, his daughters, Diane (Tom) Boltik of Springfield, VA, Deb (Jim) Michel of Rochester, MN, and Donna (Kent) Tammel of Harmony, MN; a nephew Galen (Bonnie) Casterton of Queens Creek, AZ, who lived with Doug and Arlys; nine grandchildren, Kris (Todd) Severson, Doug (Jen) Richards, Derek Richards, Adam & Bryan Boltik, Justin (Ann) Michel, Jamie (Kurt) Breuer, Alees (Zac) Gleason, and Cory Tammel; six great grandchildren, Peyton, Emily, Marvin, Mia, Liam, Farrah, and a sister-in-law Anita Casterton, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife Arlys.
