To the Editor,
After the Civil War Democrats in southern states enacted poll taxes to restrict the voting rights of those (the newly freed slaves) who would be most likely to vote against them. Now in Minnesota it appears the same tactic (restricting the voting rights of those who would be very likely to vote against them) is being attempted by the Republicans in the form of the voter ID amendment. Restricting the voting right of any citizen is a most serious infringement on our basic concept of democracy, upon which this nation was founded.
This time the infringement would affect many in the military, who right now are waging battle for this freedom we hold dear, minorities and the elderly who have worked all their lives in this nation. Many would now have difficulty (time and money-wise) to be able to procure this voter ID.
There are also other good reasons to vote NO on this amendment: the expense and the fact that it is totally unnecessary. Others can address these issues.
Minnesota has the highest voter turn out of any state in the nation (about 75 percent).
Do we really want to fall to a minority status, which would result if this amendment were to pass? Protect our democracy! Say NO to the voter ID amendment on election day!!
