To the Editor,
On November 6, 2012, Minnesotans will vote on a constitutional amendment that would permanently limit the freedom to marry for committed same-sex couples in our state. The question will be “Shall the Minnesotan Constitution be amended to provide that only the union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota.”
I believe this is a hurtful amendment. A “Yes” vote on this amendment would permanently limit the freedom of same -sex couples to ever marry in Minnesota. A “No” vote would NOT legalize marriage for same-sex couples, but would simply allow conversation about marriage to continue.
Marriage is about love, commitment, and responsibility and no one should be told that it is illegal to marry the person they love. Same-sex couples want to marry for the same reasons as anyone else. Yes, marriage is about love and as I have shared before, “No clergy or church will be forced to marry same-sex couples if they choose not to.”
Did you read the recent article written by Rev. Jackson, Greenfield Lutheran Church, “Love Will Always Win.” He asks “Is what I am DOING loving?” and that “it is impossible to hate our brother or sister and still love God.”
Most Minnesotans have gay relatives, friends, neighbors, or colleagues and we know how much this vote means to them. Actually, defeating this amendment matters to everyone because equal rights and equal treatment is a value we all value. Please vote “no” on November 6th and remember “love belongs to everyone.”

EW says:If gay marriage dishonors God, then so does divorce, but I don't see you pursuing an amendment to make divorce illegal. The scariest thing about voting yes is that this becomes permanent and there is no opportunity in the future to change it.
Most people dont' realize what voting yes truly means. Voting no does not make gay marriage legal in MN, it simply means it can be discussed later.
