Spring Valley City Council approves new solid waste contract

After 30 minutes of discussion, the Spring Valley City Council voted to award the solid waste contract for residential garbage to Waste Management. The decision was made after an informal poll from members of the Council. Mayor Jim Struzyk said that he had one person who favored awarding the contract to Sunshine Sanitation of Stewartville. When the final tally was made among the Council members, there were three people that favored Sunshine and seven endorsing Waste Management.
A Waste Management spokesperson said that the prices for residential are locked in and commercial would be able to make their own choice. Under the contract the 32 gallon cart was $7.07 and the City or resident would pay an additional fee if diesel fuel increases to a dollar amount equal to or above $4.00 per gallon. Council members discussed the proposal and then voted in favor of awarding the contract to Waste Management with one member, Todd Jones voting no.
Broadway pay estimate #4
Payment of $237,055.90 was made to Yaggy Colby for the Broadway street project. The total amount paid to date is $1,503,628.74 which reflects 82 percent of the project completion.
Approval for radios
Council approved a purchase of four Motorola radios at a cost of $3,100.00 to replace current radios when the new radio system is in operation. The cost includes programming and a three-year warranty.
Todd Jones brought forward the names of four applicants that will be assigned to the Spring Valley Fire Department. Pending background checks the four people will be accepted. They are Nick Atwood, Dennis Yoder, Brad Musel and Robert Vogen.
