Extra seat belt enforcement activities will be taking place from October 12-26. The Minnesota Primary Seat Belt law requires drivers and all passengers to be buckled up or in the correct child restraint or booster seat. Children in Minnesota must ride in a child safety restraint or booster seat until they are age 8 or 4 feet 9 inches tall. Law enforcement officers can stop motorists solely for seat belt violations and may fine them. A fine can be more than $100. The best way to prevent receiving a fine is to have your car or booster seat checked by a trained professional.
Fillmore County Public Health and Toward Zero Death Coalition are hosting a free child passenger safety clinic on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. The clinic will be held at the DNR Forestry Building located at 912 Houston Street in Preston, MN. Pregnant women, families with children, and others who transport children are encouraged to participate in this clinic. Seats will be checked by trained staff and new restraints or booster seats will be provided to those that qualify. To participate in the clinic, call 507-765-3898 to make an appointment.
For more information regarding child and adult passenger safety or to learn more about the car seat clinic, contact Fillmore County Public Health at 507-765-2636 or e-mail bpohlman@co.fillmore.mn.us
