Spring Valley discusses Main Street project

It was an evening of dealing with communications for various departments within the city. This included new radios for Emergency Management and controllers for the sirens in the city along with a control station, mobiles, portables and a repeater. The total for Emergency Management was $18,167.03. Spring Valley Ambulance came to the table with a request for one radio at a cost of $2,330.50. Next in line was the Fire Department with a request for 12 radios at a cost of $5,937.98. All of the requests were approved and stated that “there is money in the budget for them.”
County Commissioner Chuck Amunrud appeared before the Council in response to the recent proposal to rebuild Main Street by rebuilding the road, which would require the city to pick up the costs of storm sewers and curbs, which the city had rejected. He said that the County Commissioners would be forced to close Main St. without the rebuilding of the road. He suggested an alternative plan which would turn Main back to the City after rebuilding it and to take a route for County Road One that would bypass Willow park and take a straight route from Main to Section and then north. After ten years, Main would be turned back to the City and CR 1 would have a straight path through the city.
There was fairly lengthy discussion regarding the pickup of garbage in the City. The Council had asked for quotes on residential collection and it came down to three interested haulers. Waste Management had a rate sheet that was covered with numbers, codes for this type of garbage and another code for another type of trash. It did have a resemblance to my neighbor’s garbage can, which is a 32 gallon priced at $7.67 dollars a month. There was mention of a discount for Senior Citizens in the proposal as well. The final part of the proposal talked about fuel surcharges. “The City/resident would pay Waste Management an additional fee if diesel fuel increases to a dollar amount equal to or above $4.00 per gallon. If diesel fuel remains below $4.00 per gallon, the fuel surcharge will be 0 percent. If diesel fuel is at or above $4.00 per gallon, the following percentages will apply to Waste Management’s base rate.” You will probably be able to monitor the fluctuations in the diesel fuel when you drive by the gas station and see how the two compare. P.S.: remember to check for the Senior discount.
The second hauler to submit a quote was Sunshine Sanitation from Stewartville but they do advertise they are a local company. They don’t show a 32-gallon container, but in comparing their 64-gallon container at $10.50 to Waste Management’s 64 gallon at $9.04 it would appear the price is lower with Waste Management.
Wm Hanson Waste Removal and Recycling is located in Chatfield and would appear that they only offer a Bag System for residential use.
The Council pondered the situation for a while and then placed it on the table for another day.
