As I walked into the Village Square of Fountain, I could feel the vibe of happiness. Happy people eating some good – no GREAT food! There was a full crowd with nearly every table consumed by food and conversation. I was lucky enough to nab a table during a very busy Thursday around lunch time.
Navigating what everyone else had ordered, I saw a wide variety of options at my fingertips. For a second, I thought that maybe I should just order dessert first. But, then my wife called right as I was scanning the menu. You see, she was on her way to Warrens, Wis., to attend the annual Cranberry Fest with some long-time friends from La Porte, Ind. Was my wife checking up on me to make sure I was eating right? No, but her phone call prompted me to plan my meal properly.
So, I ordered a cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato, and you know what they offered that I don’t hear too often? The waitress offered wheat or white for the bun. Now, I try to be as health conscious as possible, so when I am offered the option of a wheat bun I go for it. That’s a no-brainer in my dining guide.
Well, the cheeseburger was fantastic, as I expected. I had never had a burger of any kind at the Village Square of Fountain, because I am usually stopping by for dinner with my wife and kids. And, we always order pizza. So, this time I had the chance to step out of the pizza box and try something different – dinner for one.
And, thankfully I did save room for dessert. I ordered a slice of strawberry rhubarb pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was delicious, and I will be back for more.
For this Real Bites, I took a different approach and I welcome reader feedback. I took a picture of Hannah Oehlke, the waitress at the Village Square of Fountain, instead of just focusing on a picture of my meal set before me. To me, the ones who turn a restaurant into a legacy of tradition – a slice of Americana – are people like Hannah. While I’m sure she was caught off guard when I asked her if I could take her picture for my Real Bites review, she smiled and obliged. Food can be wonderful, and people can make it better. Thanks to Hannah for the excellent service!
My family frequents the Village Square of Fountain, and I would encourage other families to stop by for pizza, burgers, a slice of pie, some good music, and a delightful dish of ice cream.
A special thanks to the owners David and Mary Milne for providing a wonderful dining option for locals and travelers. The Village Square of Fountain is located at 99 Main Street in downtown Fountain on the corner across from the First State Bank of Fountain, Drury’s Furniture and The Bent Wrench. Trust me, you cannot get lost in Fountain. If you can’t find it, just give me a call at 507-251-5297. And, after I show you how to get there, you can buy me dessert!
