ST. PAUL, Minn., July 12, 2010: Education Minnesota President Tom Dooher has been re-elected as a vice president with the American Federation of Teachers. Dooher was re-elected to the post during the AFT's 81st biennial convention in Seattle, WA, which concluded on July 11.

"I'm privileged to serve the AFT in this capacity," Dooher said. "We have a lot of hard work ahead of us and I'm eager to continue the efforts we've already started to improve the quality of education in American schools."

During the convention, 3,000 delegates ratified resolutions calling for teacher evaluation systems based on clearly defined teaching standards and using multiple methods of measuring good teaching practice and student outcomes.

Delegates also embraced a resolution spelling out what every student needs to succeed in school: highly-trained teachers, a safe and supportive learning environment, a well-rounded curriculum, healthy bodies and minds, strong partners at home to support students, and adequate resources tailored to each child's developmental needs and strengths.

"Minnesota is a model that other states look to when it comes to excellence in education," Dooher said. "Our mission is to make sure that we build on our successes while we pursue changes that will make education in Minnesota even better."

Dooher was first elected as an AFT vice president in July of 2008. He was unanimously re-elected in March 2010 to a second three-year term as President of Education Minnesota.

The AFT is one of two national teachers unions, both affiliated with Education Minnesota. The AFT represents 1.5 million education professionals throughout the country.
