ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota's blueberry picking season is ramping up as farms in the Twin Cities metro area and in central Minnesota are ready for customers.

If you live in the northeast Twin Cities Metro area, you're especially lucky. There are several blueberry patches from Stillwater to Cambridge that are reporting a bumper crop of "blues" set for consumption.

"Right now, you can practically stand at one bush and pick a half an ice cream pail," says Mary Larsen, owner of Covered Bridge Farm near Forest Lake. That excitement is echoed by Joan Hadley of Blue Heaven Berry Farm near Stacy who says they have an excellent blueberry crop.

If you'll be on the road heading north on I-35W you might look into a quick diversion as berries as far north as Hinckley are now ripe. Some locations, such as High Hopes Acres Berry Farm near Hinckley are offering both raspberries and blueberries for your picking pleasure.

There are 26 blueberry farms statewide listed in the Minnesota Grown Directory. The Directory includes a Google map function that allows visitors to to find the blueberry patch closest to home.

While the blueberry crop may be peaking right now in the southern half of the state, berries may not be ready for picking in northern Minnesota until the weekend of July 17. There are several farms on the Iron Range from Grand Rapids to Eveleth that will be ready for pickers soon.

Even during the season, not every farm offers picking all the time -- so the rule of thumb for prospective pickers is to make sure to call ahead. Also, young children and pets may not be allowed at some pick-your-own farms.
