Celebrate Local Farmers’ Markets with Fillmore County Public Health

Fri, Sep 7th, 2012
Posted in All Arts & Culture

Minnesota fall brings with it wonderful foods such as root vegetables, squash, tomatoes, peppers, garlic, popcorn, grapes, and apples, which can all be found at local farmers’ markets. The six farmers’ markets of Fillmore County provide a great opportunity for residents and visitors to purchase affordable, healthy foods while supporting local growers and producers. The goal of local farmers’ markets aligns with USDA MyPlate, which encourages Americans to eat more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Fillmore County Public Health (FCPH) supports both local farmers’ markets and the use of MyPlate as a means of eating healthier. During September, FCPH will be available at various markets to provide education on how to add more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet. Food preparation tips, portion management, and recipes will be made available to all patrons. Free dinner plates featuring how to eat based upon USDA MyPlate will be given away to adults and children while supplies last. These efforts are being supported through the UCare Fund of MN.

Please join FCPH in celebrating the fall bounty of our local markets by shopping at one of the following locations and/or coming to a MyPlate education event during one of the dates and times listed below.

For more information about MyPlate, please contact Brenda Pohlman of FCPH at 507-765-2636.
