Rochester, MN – In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 15 minutes, claiming more than 36,000 lives each year. It is estimated that an attempt is made every minute, with close to one million people attempting suicide annually. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. among adults 18-65, the second leading cause of death among teens and young adults, and individuals ages 65 and older account for 16 percent of all suicide deaths. This is a public health issue that does not discriminate by age, gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic status.
Suicide takes an enormous toll on family, friends, co-workers, and the entire community. AFSP provides opportunities for survivors of suicide loss to get involved through a wide variety of educational, outreach, awareness, advocacy and fundraising programs. AFSP is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.
By walking in AFSP’s Out of the Darkness Community Walks you will be walking with thousands of people nationwide to raise money for AFSP’s vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, and assist survivors of suicide loss. More than 85 cents of every dollar goes directly to AFSP’s research, education, and advocacy and survivor programs.
The Rochester 2012 Out of the Darkness Walk will be held September 15, 2012, at the East Pavilion of Silver Lake Park. Registration is at 10:00 a.m., walk starts at 11:00 a.m. and is finished by 2:00 p.m. This is the fifth year for the Rochester Out of the Darkness walk.
