If you are not hungry when you walk in the door of Smoky River BBQ, you will be when the aroma hits you. The smell of BBQ brings to mind summer picnics and family gatherings. The placement of the business next to the river in a quiet spot also sparks these memories.
Gene Lawston, Julie Meyer, and Brett Stecher opened the business in September of 2011 after remodeling the building which used to warehouse supplies and trucks belonging to the lumberyard in Lanesboro years ago.
The menu includes a wide variety of meats which are delicious and tender. Homemade salads and beans include more than your average fresh ingredients, such as the broccoli bacon wild rice salad and smoked chicken salad. Garlic roasted potatoes are another choice of a side dish. The meal includes a generous portion of meat, cornbread and two sides at a reasonable price.
Smoky River BBQ has held seafood boils in the past which were well received and occasionally hold prime rib nights.
Smoky River BBQ owners have expansive plans for the future which include a stage for bands to play, with thoughts of using the stage area as an outdoor movie theatre for “family nights” at some point. The upstairs of the restaurant is currently being remodeled with hopes to rent it out on a daily basis in the future. This area would be perfect for family reunions, birthday parties and such as it will have a full bathroom, kitchenette, and a deck overlooking the river.
According to owner Gene Lawston, there are plans for horseshoe courts, a possible bocce ball area, as well as many other options for growth.
Smoky River BBQ is also available for catering year-round and will smoke any meat you bring them. Gene Lawston commented that he has smoked wild turkeys for people and thought that it would “be a good Thanksgiving meal.” They have also smoked trout and other types of fish at customer request.
Summer hours are Thursday through Sunday with expanded hours coming next year. The business will close the week before Christmas and will re-open the beginning of April 2013.
Smoky River BBQ is located at 101 Rivers Edge Road in Lanesboro, Minn. The number to call for Smoky River BBQ is (507) 467-RIBS (7427).
