“Got a Dream Boy, got a song, paint your wagon and come along! “So says a well-known song from the musical comedy, Paint Your Wagon. With music by Lerner and Lowe, the show debuted on Broadway in 1951 and will hit the stage as part of the 40th Anniversary celebration of Brave Community Theatre in Spring Valley, August 15-18.
It’s the story of a crusty old miner, Ben Rumson, who finds gold while digging a grave and thus the historic California Gold Rush begins.
Miners are happy to pan for gold, but with the only girl in town being Rumson’s young daughter, soon the men of Rumson town have a yearning. A Mormon with two wives arrives and one of them, Elizabeth, agrees to be auctioned off. Rumson has the high bid, but soon it is evident she has fallen in love with his partner.
Finally, a stage coach with Cherry and her Fandango girls arrive and the frivolity begins, just as the gold runs out. Rumson decides to leave and departs singing “I Was Born Under a Wandrin’ Star.”
“They Call the Wind Maria,” “There’s a Coach Comin’ In,” and “I Talk to the Trees” are just a few of the songs the audience might remember from the movie with Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin.
“It’s a very large cast and a rollicking good time,” said Laurie Helmers, Artistic and Musical Director of the show. “We have a wonderful cast drawn from all over the area.”
Past participants of Brave Community Theatre are invited to a reunion reception to be held every night after the show.
The show begins at 7:30 pm each evening at the Spring Valley Community Center, 200 S. Broadway, with pre-show entertainment half an hour ahead.
