Weather played an important role in this year’s Buffalo Bill Days celebration in Lanesboro, Minn. With activities getting started on Friday in some brisk wind, and Saturday being slightly soggy. Sunday, however, was “a beautiful day” said Bobbi Vickerman, City Administrator of Lanesboro.
The festivities began on Friday, August 3rd, with the celebration kickoff at the beer and brat tent with JT Thompson providing entertainment. Friday also marked the beginning of the softball tournament, which attracted a crowd, as did the volleyball tournament and golf tournament, keeping sports enthusiasts busy trying to watch them all.
The St. Mane Theatre held productions of “In The Company of Legends” on Saturday and Sunday to the delight of theatre-goers, as did Commonweal Theatre’s “The 39 Steps” and “The Philadelphia Story.” The band “Troubleshooter” played Friday night for the street dance which was well attended.
Despite the weather on Saturday, people were “out and about” according to Vickerman. The Marketplace and Farmer’s Market opened on Saturday, giving visitors a vast selection of produce and products to choose from. Music filled the gazebo in Sylvan Park on Saturday with music from the “Bandanas,” “Dave Wilson and the Root River Jam,” and “Walter Bradley and Steve Arnold” all performing throughout the afternoon. There were “Kids Fun” activities in Sylvan Park which made for many happy children, even with a little rain falling.
Saturday night, as the rain moved out of the area, the excitement got under way with “Next 2 Nothing” performing to a very enthusiastic crowd in the parking lot of Sylvan Park. Everyone in attendance seemed to have a great time dancing and visiting with friends who they may not see any other time of the year other than during Buffalo Bill Days. Dusk on Saturday brought fireworks with small and large groups gathering all over town to watch.
Sunday brought sunny skies and continuing activities, including the grand parade at 1:30. This year’s Buffalo Bill Days parade was exceptional with a wide array of floats, musical guests, and characters of all types. The Grand Marshalls of this year’s parade were Jerry and Sharon Post. Jerry and Sharon taught many of the parade attendees, both having been teachers in the Lanesboro School District for many years. Jerry said that he and Sharon being Grand Marshalls for the parade “was an honor,” and he added that “it was fun seeing all the people.”
Following the parade, Sylvan Park was filled with a crowd once again and throughout the day with more entertainment provided by “The Alley Cats” and DJ & Karaoke. Immediately after the parade, “Cody” the buffalo was at Lanesboro Local taking photos with children and adults, who both seemed to be unsettled standing next to an animal that weighs between 1800 - 2000 pounds. This was actually “Cody 2” who has appeared in a Taco John commercial and a jean commercial, according to his owner Mike Fogel. No matter what the weather brought to Lanesboro last weekend the city brought it’s best to visitors, with the town looking beautiful, as usual, and the residents bringing a welcoming attitude towards visitors. Mark your calendars now for next year’s Buffalo Bill Days which will be held on August 2, 3, and 4, 2013.
