Outdoor movie and music night in Whalan

How did it all begin? In June, 2010 the Whalan Hall Restoration Committee was formed. Our goal: To renovate the old town hall that was built in 1898 and in bad repair. The City of Whalan started things rolling by earmarking $20,000 for the project.
Two years and counting! Through many fundraising projects and donations we have raised almost $60,000 – not bad for a village of 63 people.
The huge old hall was rolled off its foundation, the foundation rebuilt and the hall moved back. This amazing feat was accomplished by the Amish. The outside has been painted with paint donated through the “Picture It Painted Project.” The inside has been gutted, new windows installed, wiring, heating, plumbing installed and foam insulation blown in. Sheetrocking the ceiling and wood on the walls is next.
We feel we have made great progress over the last two years but know we have a long way to go – so our fundraising continues.
One of our first fundraising projects was an outdoor movie shown on the outside wall of the town hall, just as they did in the 1930’s and 40’s. It proved to be a very popular event. On Saturday, August 18 we will be showing our 3rd annual outdoor movie, along with the toe – tappin music of the Arnold – Bradley Band.
This year’s movie, Dolphin Tale, is the inspirational story of Sawyer, a boy who discovers an injured dolphin, which is brought to a marine hospital and named Winter. The injuries have cost Winter her tail. But with Sawyer’s devotion, the expertise of a marine biologist, and the brilliance of a prosthetist (Morgan Freeman) who creates a new tail, Winter may receive a second chance at life.
Everyone is invited to attend this free event with lively music and a movie the whole family will enjoy. Food stand will open in the town hall at 6 p.m. See the progress we have made. Music by the Arnold – Bradley Band will begin at 6:30. Raffle drawing at 8:30 followed by the movie.
Our sincere thanks to everyone who has in any way contributed to our project. We hope to see you in Whalan Saturday evening, August 18. Don’t forget your lawn chair!
