More spring sports, more diamond festivities! FC/L baseball ended a 6-game slide. Versus R-P, they began with six straight hits, five runs. After a Trojan comeback (5-4) Dan Gatzke (2-4, 2 RBI) capped the evening with a solo HR as the Falcons held off R-P 6-4. Nick Powell (2-4, 2 RBI’s) and Nick Ebner (7 H, 4 R, first 3 innings, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 R, last four, Win) aided the FC/L cause. Dalton Bellock was 2-3 (RBI) for R-P.

The Falcons then amassed their first winning-streak of the season versus D-E. A Gatske single in the bottom of the 7th plated Jake Ristau (doubled) for the 7-6 walk-off win. Tyler Eickhoff (3-4, 3B, 3 R, 2 RBI; pitched final 2 2/3 with 0 H, 5 K’s) was quite busy, quite effective.

In Chatfield, there was good and bad news. The good: courtesy of a GMLOK double-dip sweep of Southland, the softball team won the 3-Rivers-South. They celebrated by defeating 11-win 1-loss SG-C 7-5, overcoming an early 4-0 deficit. Their 8th straight “W,” they moved their streak to 10 before losing (read further).

The bad news: the baseball team dropped out of a 1st place tie due to a 0-3 week. On the softball diamond, GMLOK’s Stephanie Russell was red hot over a four-game span (PEM, SouthlandX2, M-C); 10-14, 2 HR’s, 3B, 6 2B’s, 14 RBI! She cooled against FC/L. The Falcons took game one 4-3. Alex Peterson won it in the bottom of the 7th with an RBI single, plating Taylor Case (2-3, 2B, SB, R). Morgan Malley (3 SB, 2 R) got the win, striking out 14. Emily Schlitter was 2-4 (3B, 2 R) for GMLOK.

In game two, GMLOK rolled to a 10-0, 6 inning, victory. Russell and Schlitter combined for a 3-hitter. Brittany Erding (CF) robbed a pair of extra base hits in the 1st inning, and then went 2-4 (2 R, SB). Five FC/L errors aided the ‘Dog cause.

Gopher Girls Highlight True Team Meet

“David versus Goliath” is how Chatfield girl’s track coach Chris Frye described his team at the Section 1A True Team Meet. With 16 girls, the Gophers had the smallest squad of the 16 participating schools. Champion Lake City had 64 athletes. And yet, finishing 2nd were the youthful Gophers (two seniors, one junior).

They did it with quality: 20 of their 28 finishes were in the top ten, in events typically 30 athletes deep. Maddy Kammer had a 1st (200), a 2nd (400) and a 3rd (High Jump). Kayla Woltz swept 1st in the distance runs, with Karen Gomez (4th 1,600, 2nd 3,200) closely behind. Kyndra Neis nearly swept the weights (1st Shot, 2nd Discus). Ashley Baker was runner-up in both sprints. Sydney Gould (Pole Vault, Long Jump), Mariah Bell (400, Triple Jump), and Maddie Talamantes (110, 300-hurdles) each had two top tens, Autum Erickson (100), Cassidy Kloes (Shot) and Haley Woltz (800) one.

The relay teams all finished top four: 4x400 1st (Talamantes, Camille Rasmussen, Bell, M. Kammer), 4x100 2nd (Erin Kammer, Nikita York, Erickson, Gould), 4x200 3rd (E. Kammer, Baker, Erickson, York), and the 4x800 4th (Bell/Veronica Sanchez/H. Woltz/C. Rasmussen). And just so she isn’t left out, Hannah Friedrich is the 16th member of the squad!

The second place finish put the Gophers in the running for a ‘wild card’ trip to state. They were denied though, finishing second (by 6.5 points). The other two county programs, R-P/H and L/FC, also fared well (4th and 7th). For R-P/H, Amy Todd had three top 10 finishes (Shot, 300-hurdles, 400). Kate MacKenzie (110, 300-hurdles), Cody Manfull (Pole Vault, Triple Jump) and Elizabeth Loken (Shot, Discus) each had two. Mariah Olson and Grace Nelson each finished top ten in the 3,200. The Jordan’s/Jordyn’s, Honken and Goree, each had a top ten finish also (Pole Vault, Long Jump). For L/FC, Olivia Haug was 1st in the Discus, 3rd the Shot, Alisa Warnes tied for 9th at the High Jump, and the 4x800 team took 3rd.
