Dennis “Denny” Edward Peterson, 65, of Rushford, MN died on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at his home.
Dennis was born on June 6, 1946, in Rushford to Edward and Josephine (Woxland) Peterson. He attended Big Martin Country School and graduated from Rushford High School in 1964. He received his Associates degree in Business from Winona State College. On June 25, 1966, he married Ruth Westby. He served in the U.S. National Guard for 8 years. Dennis worked for Tri County Electric Coop in Rushford for 32 years, retiring in 1998. While at Tri County he also farmed, retiring from farming in 2010. Dennis worked part time at Farmers Elevator in Rushford for ten years.
Dennis believed in giving back to his community and did so in many ways. He was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church where he was on the council and was president. Dennis was a thirty-year member of the Rushford Fire Dept. He started the Youth Gun Safety Program in Rushford and ran the program for 15 years. Dennis was a charter member and past president of the Rushford Jaycees. He was a member, officer and past president of the Rushford Lions Club. Dennis was a member of the Rushford School Board and the American Legion Post 94 in Rushford. Dennis was Sergeant of Arms for the Color Guard for over 35 years. He was currently on the Board of Directors at Rushford State Bank. He enjoyed farming, playing cards, family holidays and spending time with friends and family. Dennis was very well-known for his quick wit and his unique one-liners.
Dennis is survived by his wife Ruth; son Nathan Peterson of Rushford; two sisters: Jane (Pete) Quamen of Rushford and Connie (Gary) Boyum of Danbury, WI; three brothers-in-law: Kenneth Feine, Dennis (Connie) Westby and Terry (Marilynn) Westby; one sister-in-law, JoAnn (Jay) Bunke; mother-in-law, Clarice Westby; several nieces and nephews, and by his three furry companions: Miss Kitty, Shadow, and Yager.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris Feine; and nephew, Justin Bunke.
The funeral service was on Monday, May 14, 2012, at Rushford Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiating. Burial was in the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.
