Youth Beef Show to be held in Preston

From June 8-10, many people are going to gather at the Fillmore County Fairgrounds in Preston for the Youth Beef Show. Young people up to the age of 21 will be there to show their beef cattle and be part of a judging competition.
According to organizer Paul Bartsh, the show has been held in Rochester in recent years. This is the first time it will be in Preston.
“The people doing it the last few years wanted to get away from it and do something different,” said Bartsh. It somehow landed with Bartsh, who has been raising purebred Limousin cattle in Rushford with his parents for ten years.
Bartsh said the show consists of all breeds of cattle, and they are shown by age. There is a Skill-a-thon, and a judging contest. The youth are usually also involved in 4-H and FFA, and they come in all different ages.
“I have seen kids as young as four or five showing cattle before,” shared Bartsh.
Youth from Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin are all welcome to join the show and get some practice. Awards and prizes will be given for the contests.
Bartsh said they had 170 head of cattle last year. “We are hoping to get there,” he said. “We’re not sure what the numbers are going to be this year.”
The youth will be judging the cattle in many categories, and is very good practice. They can bring as many head of cattle as they want, and cattle will also be brought in from all over the tri-state area.
Bartsh said the judge will be Shane Lindsey from Prairie City, Iowa. “The University of Minnesota is bringing their cattle show on Sunday,” he added. “There will be two shows in one weekend.”
Bartsh describes the show as a learning experience for the kids.
“It will be good practice for the kids,” he said. “It keeps them busy. It helps them get ready for the State Fair and county 4-H projects.”
There are many sponsors that make a show like this possible. Bartsh said AgStar is a big sponsor and supporter.
“We are also trying to bring business to the community of Preston,” he explained. “We are using the IGA for food, and Oak Meadow Meats. Local businesses have been a huge support to us.”
Bartsh is hoping to make this show an annual event. “It will be a good time,” he said. “It’s good to get the kids out to meet people. I have been showing for many years, and it’s all about meeting the people.”
