Whalan Stand Still Parade

On Saturday, May 19, at 11:00 the Whalan Stand Still Parade is on the move again. Meet Vincent, the Gypsy horse, bred to pull the colorful, historic Gypsy vardos (wagons). He is handsome, strong and gentle and will bring along some folks to tell you about himself, his origins and travels.
This year Whalan pays special tribute to the American Farmer. Perhaps you are one, know one, or would like to meet one. At 10:55, emcee Phil Dying will introduce Arden Pederson, Grand Marshal, and long-time local farmer. At 11:00 the Parade commences and stands still until 12:00 noon. As always, interesting old tractors will be in the Stand Still Parade as well as antique cars and numerous other entries for you, the moving part of the parade, to investigate.
At 12:00 noon the “Solid Gold” band returns to the Whalan stage. If you were here last year you will surely want to hear them again. Enjoy classic rock, emphasizing the ‘60s. At 1:30, while you may be eating any number of delicious foods sponsored by The Whalan Lutheran Church, the contestants for the pie-eating contest will be eating pie from Whalan’s Aroma Pie Shop.
At 2:00 “The Has Beens” take the stage until 4:00 for two more hours of great music, mostly blues and rock. The band of five is made up of two fathers, their two sons and Terry McKinley from “Solid Gold” on drums.
For the kids, there are free rides on the “ Little Blue Choo,” sponsored by Ace Communications and Tri County Electric. Seek out the petting zoo, children’s games with prizes, balloons, and bed races. The kids can spin the wheel of bicycle safety to test their knowledge of bicycle safety and win prizes for correct answers. Check the schedule when you arrive.
Jill and Deane Johnson, authors of “Little Minnesota” will be on hand for book signing and conversation. Whalan is featured in this nostalgic look at 100 small Minnesota towns.
Many arts and crafts demonstrations will be in town along the bicycle trail. Other things to see in Whalan include Mike Gabrich with his 1855 Hi-Wheeler, Ernie’s restored 1917 Gas Station, and Stan’s Still making moonshine.
Robin’s Upholstery and Antiques in Whalan will provide vintage clothing to wear for the “Stand Still in Time for the Photographer.” Look for Robin’s shop in the old bank building, between the old post office and the pie shop to find this fun opportunity for the whole family.
Bring your appetite to town for Lefse, Rommegrot, Egg McWhalans, brats, hot dogs, rhubarb/apple and other desserts, popcorn, coffee, pop, and water. The proceeds are shared by the Whalan Lutheran Church and the Village Hall Restoration Project.
On Sunday, May 20, at 10:30 a.m. Whalan Lutheran Church invites the public for an outdoor church service in the gazebo.
