It was a week of intra-county beat-downs.

Chatfield baseball started the blitzing. They jumped out 10-2 after two versus R-P. Seven more runs later and the 10-run-rule after five was in effect; 17-6 was the final. Collin Maki (3-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R), Justin Viss (2-4, RBI, 4 R, SB), Tyler Lund (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 3 R), and Mitch Irish (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R, SB) headed the attack. Every Gopher starter recorded a hit; eight drove in runs. Pitcher Nate Skare moved to 3-0. Sophomore Cale Stensgard was a/the big R-P bright spot (3-3, 6 RBI, 2B, HR).

A night later, the Trojans were in Preston. They did the shellacking versus FC/L.

Stensgard turned in a mound-masterpiece (7 IP, one clean single, BB, 10 K’s, Win). The Trojans scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings. Stensgard had three RBI’s (making it nine in 27 hours). James Knudsen (2-4) had 2 RBI’s. Ethan Wilkemeyer had an RBI single, reached base in all four plate-appearances, scoring two runs. Zach Ansell went 3 for 4 (RBI, Run). Every Trojan (save for Stensgard) scored a run. R-P dispatched with FC 9-0.

Tyler Eickhoff got FC/L’s lone clean hit. He took the loss (7 IP, 12 K’s, 5 BB’s, 9 R’s).

The lopsided play continued on the softball diamond. Chatfield hosted GMLOK for a double-header.

Only ten innings were needed.

Bulldog Stephanie Russell’s 3-run HR in the top of the 3rd gave GMLOK a 3-2 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Chatfield scored 8 runs. They prevailed 13-3 in five. Sidney Irish was 3-4 (2B, 3 RBI, SB, R). Kirsten Keefe (3 R), Sarah Costello (RBI, 2 R), and Erin Bradt (2 RBI, R) all went 2-3. Sydney Johnson (2B, SB) did the same for GMLOK.

Game two followed one’s blueprint, Gophers 13-2 in five. Tori Woltz (3-4, 2B, 3 RBI, 3 R), Keefe (3-3, 3 R), Irish (2-3, 2B, SB, 2 RBI), and Ashley Wolter (2-3, SB, 3 R) did damage. Gopher 3-6 hitters (Wolter, Woltz, Keefe, and Sarah Costello) were electric (9 for 13 with 11 runs-scored). GMLOK had just three hits (Kailynn Hamersma 1-2, R). Katie Jech and Grace Sagdalen got the ‘W’s’ for the 2-0 victors.

Walk to Win

The Bulldog girls got redemption though. Versus R-P, they didn’t use offense, defense, hitting or pitching so much to win. They used their eyes. GMLOK hitters drew (were issued) 19 walks! In the 4th inning, the first seven Bulldogs to bat got a passes, all scored, giving GMLOK a 10-5 lead.

The score was 10-7 in the bottom of the 7th. R-P’s first three batters then reached. Two sacrifice flies later, the Trojans were down 10-9 with runners on 1st and 2nd for four-hole hitter Keela Brand (3-4, 2 RBI at that point). She grounded hardly to third. After a bobble, a foot was placed on the nearby bag (for the force out). GMLOK held for their first win (1-4).

They had just three hits. One was a solo HR to center by Ms. Russell (#2 of the week/season). Haley Colton walked five times.

R-P had 12 hits, led by Kenzie Lind (2-3, 3 R, 2 SB, 2 BB), Jessica Rislov (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R), and Brand. Emily Schlitter (7 IP, 12 H, 9 R, 4 BB, 2 K) got the win, Kendra Crawford (5 2/3 IP, 2 H, 8 R, 15 BB, 13 K) the loss. It was R-P’s first game.

Three Get Hoops State Honors

Nick Thompson (R-P), Trent Vix (R-P), and Tanner Lange (Kingsland) put a final cap on their prep b-ball careers. They were recognized AP All-State Honorable Mention. Other 3-Rivers/SEC athletes to receive the distinction were Spring Grove’s Aric Elton, St. Charles’ Will Swiggum, and P-E-M’s Sam Ruth and Cory Speer. No girls from the county were honored.
