To the Editor,
The main concerns of Americans are jobs and the economy, so how did the conversation change to abortion? The new members of Congress have abandoned jobs and the economy and focused on restricting women’s access to abortion. Pro-life advocates frame the issue in terms of “good and evil, life and death!” The truth underlying this controversy is that we are all “pro-life.” No one is “for” abortion. The difference between pro-life and pro-choice positions is how best to deal with the dilemma. Making abortion illegal would not stop abortions. Abstinence has not been wildly successful and adoption is an “after the fact” resolution. Pro-life advocates are pursuing a strategy that is ineffective, can’t work, and is self defeating. Pro-life supporters are unwilling to confront the complexity of women’s reproductive health. There is rape, incest, fear, mental illness, and poverty. Medical diagnosis of women’s reproductive health should be made by a doctor, not members of Congress. The only way we can reduce the number of abortions is through education, prevention and programs for women who need help in order to carry to full term.
Respectfully submitted,
