Ever since October, people in Mabel and the surrounding area have had a local option when it comes to buying clothing and other items. It’s New 2 U was opened by Stephanie Liddiard, who owns and runs the Split Endz Salon and Spa in Mabel.
Liddiard said she was a single mom for years, and she frequently shopped at thrift shops for herself and her children.
“When we bought this building, we decided we wanted to utilize the whole building,” said Liddiard.
Right now the hair salon is on the main floor, as well as a photography studio. Liddiard and her mom, Genette Halverson decided to open their own thrift shop in the downstairs area.
At first they didn’t think they would have enough merchandise to fill the large room. Now they have run out of room and are looking at expanding. At first they thought it would be a place to sell gently used children’s clothing. Now they sell clothing, shoes, accessories and other items for men and women of all ages as well.
“People bring things to us, and we buy what we need,” said Halverson.
Liddiard has certain restrictions on the items she buys. “I want things that are only about two to three years old,” explained Liddiard. “There can’t be any rips, stains, tears, or broken zippers.”
Liddiard and Halverson said they have learned over the months what people are looking for, and what they should buy.
“I try to keep the prices reasonable so it’s affordable for families,” said Liddiard. “Right now you literally could clothe the whole family for $100.”
The store has had a lot of business since opening, and not only from Mabel residents. People have come up from Iowa to shop there as well.
“We have really met a lot of nice people,” shared Halverson.
Liddiard lives in Waukon, Iowa with her husband and children. She makes the half-hour trip to Mabel for work, and she really enjoys it.
According to Liddiard, a lot of young adults and teenagers shop at the store. Not only can high school girls tan and get their hair and nails done at the salon, they can also shop the selection of prom dresses downstairs.
The cash register was recently moved upstairs to make room for more clothing racks.
“My goal is to sell more active wear, maternity clothes, specialty stuff,” said Halverson.
Liddiard can understand how exciting it is to go shopping for your children and find something for yourself as well. She enjoys being able to give families affordable clothing not just for the kids, but mom and dad as well. “It makes me feel good,” she said. “I know how that feels.”
Anyone can check out the Facebook page, which keeps people aware of specials and sales. Liddiard said there will be some 50 percent off sales this summer.
One of the goals of the mother and daughter team is to bring more business to Mabel.
“If we can save people a trip going to Rochester or La Crosse or taking business out of town, that really helps,” said Liddiard.
It’s New 2 U also sells soy lotion, soap, and candles, as well as Poparazzi Jewelry at low prices. They are open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10-5, and Saturday 9 - 2 p.m.
