Opening Day: Bulldogs & Gophers go MLB-way

High school baseball games are (scheduled to be) 7 inning affairs. The GMLOK and Chatfield baseball squads decided to act like pros for their first game of the season. They went 9 innings, flirted with darkness-induced suspension, but in the end a verdict was sealed, at the very last moment.
The Gophers jumped ahead early, 2-0 after two innings, 4-2 after four (4-3 after five). In the top of the sixth, the visiting Bulldogs utilized a couple walks, a couple Gopher miscues (one error, one wild pitch), and a couple hits, the biggest a 2-run single by junior 3B Marshall Oeltjen, to score four runs (all with 2 outs). GMLOK took their first lead 7-4.
It remained that way until the bottom of the seventh, where the Gophers utilized three walks and a couple of Bulldog errors to score three runs (the last courtesy of a wild pitch). They tied the game without a hit in the inning.
Eleven men came up, and eleven went down in extra frames (2 2/3 innings), leaving Chatfield to their last out (the game was to be suspended). Mitch Narveson then ‘took one for the team’ (got hit by a pitch). Leadoff man, second basemen Zach Eggers fell behind 1-and-2 before fouling off six straight pitches. The 10th pitch was wild, allowing Narveson to take second. The eleventh was spanked through the hole in the right side of the infield. Eggers’ single plated the winning run; giving the Gopher’s the dramatic victory. The end was fitting, as Narveson (2-2, 2B, 2 BB’s, HBP, 3 R’s, RBI, reached safely in all five plate-appearances) and Eggers (3-6, SB, RBI) were the Gophers to best offensive weapons.
Jake Neis was also very busy, going 1 for 2 but reaching three times via walk. Nate Skare got the win, facing three and setting down three in the top of the 9th. Trenton Bleifus took the loss (4 2/3 IP, 1 H, 3 R’s, 6 K’s, 5 BB’s). Bleifus did do his part at the plate, going 3-5 with an RBI, a SB, and a run-scored. Oeltjen (2 RBI’s, SB) and Trevor Gomer each went 2-5. Sam Eberle was 1 for 4, but scored two runs and stole two bases. The Bulldogs had seven thefts as a team. Chatfield used four pitchers and was out-hit 11 to 7.
Game Two, Skare & Gophers 2-0
Sophomore pitcher Nate Skare’s hurling abilities were only needed briefly in the season opener (versus GMLOK). Two days later, he took the mound as the starter against northern rival Dover-Eyota. He worked much longer. He was impressive. Skare relinquished just one run on three hits over five innings. He struck out nine (at least one in every inning) and walked none. Offensively, he helped himself, chopping a two-run single up the middle in the first inning. Those runs would prove enough for a Gopher victory.
They weren’t all that crossed home plate Brian Baum’s club.
Chatfield broke open a 2 to 1 contest in the fifth inning. A 2-run double to the right field wall by Tyler Lund was the (inning and game’s) biggest blast. Mitch Irish and Colin Maki also notched RBI’s, giving the Goph’s a 6-1 edge. They added three more in the sixth inning (two courtesy of a Jason Kappers single). A close game most of the way ended with Chatfield winning 9 to 1. They improved their record to 2-0. Skare owns both pitching victories.
In addition to the above efforts, two-hole hitter Jake Neis went 2 for 3 with a walk, a SB, and three runs scored. In addition to Skare’s 9 K’s, Tyler Lund added two giving the team 11 (with only 1 BB). Dover-Eyota, by contrast, had five BB’s (and a hit-batsmen) with only 2 strikeouts. All of Chatfield’s runs scored with 2 outs.
