ST. PAUL (July 29, 2010) - It is that time of the year again when farmers, ranchers and over 40,000 attendees converge at the Gilfillan Estate near Redwood Falls for Farmfest. This year Farmfest will be held August 3-5, and over 500 organizations and companies involved in farming will be there. Below are some of the highlights of Farmfest, but be sure to check out the Farmfest website, www.farmfest.com, to learn about all the activities.

As in years past, there is a lot of action under the forum tent. This year the forums include one with the congressional candidates running for federal office; a discussion on carbon credits; a governor candidate's forum; a discussion on the livestock industry; and the auctioneer championship. Farmers Union Agency will once again be sponsoring the Pedal Pull contest every day at 1 p.m. near entrance gate 2.

"The Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) tent is located just west of the forum tent, so after you sit and listen to the debate in the forum tent, swing by the Farmers Union booth to check the ag markets, grab a cup of coffee or water and discuss what's on your mind," said Doug Peterson, Minnesota Farmers Union President. "I am part of the panel who asks questions of the governor candidates, and I want to make sure they know how important it is for farmers to finally get a decent price at the farmgate. National Farmers Union Vice President of Government Relations Chandler Goule will be on a panel discussing carbon credits. Farmers Union will be well represented at the forum tent, and will be sure to get the Farmers Union voice heard."

MFU is again a proud sponsor of the second annual women's breakfast on Thursday, August 5 at 9 a.m. The breakfast will be held at a new location, the Tauer Pavilion located on the Gilfillan Estate, adjacent to the Farmfest show grounds. The keynote speaker will be Esther Duncan, creator and designer of the Farm Woman's Apron Project. Esther has spent countless hours researching and studying the history of the farm woman's apron. Breakfast attendees are encouraged to bring their own aprons to both share their stories and discover the historical past of their own personal aprons.

This event is open to all women and provides an opportunity to network, socialize and enjoy the company of fellow women in agriculture. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. with the keynote speaker and breakfast beginning at 9 a.m. Tickets are on sale through the Farmfest corporate offices on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are $15 and include a complimentary ticket to Farmfest (a $10 value). For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.farmshows.com or call Melissa Voight at 800-827-8007 x 3304.

Minnesota Farmers Union (www.mfu.org) is a nonprofit membership-based organization working to protect and enhance the economic interests and quality of life of family farmers and ranchers, as well as rural communities.
