HARLAND C. SCHOPPERS, age 83, of rural Preston, Minn., passed away Tuesday morning, July 17, 2012, at Rochester Methodist Hospital after a short bout with pancreatic cancer.
Harland Curtis Schoppers was born October 31, 1928, in Forestville Township, Fillmore Co., the son of Harry and Rena (Hebrink) Schoppers. He attended the Old Stone country school and was a 1947 graduate of Preston High School. He was employed at Vanderbie Hardware Store in Lime Springs, Iowa, before entering the US Army in 1951 and serving until 1953 as an electrician/trainer. He married Selma Jorgenson September 25, 1953, at Saetersdal Lutheran Church in rural Lime Springs. Together they bought a farm in Carimona Township where they lived and farmed to the present.
Harland was a lifelong member of the Greenleafton Reformed Church of rural Preston. He was a past president of the Fillmore County Farm Bureau and had served on the Greenleafton Cemetery Board for a number of years. He enjoyed snowmobiling with his grandchildren, playing cards and dancing with friends.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years and 10 months, Selma; his daughter, Pamela (Eugene) Timmerman of Rochester; son, David (Tammy) Schoppers of Spring Valley; grandchildren, Traci (Henry) McHenry of Pittsburgh, Penn., Terry Timmerman of Spring Valley, and Klysen and Klarissa Schoppers both of Spring Valley; great-grandchildren, Prestyn Timmerman and Bentleigh Schoppers; sister, Bonnie (Lyle) Thomas of Preston; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Don and Keith; and a sister, Lillian Dornink.
The funeral will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 21, 2012, at the Greenleafton Reformed Church with Rev. Roger Lokker officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in the Greenleafton Cemetery. Friends may call at the Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston, 5 – 8:00 p.m., Friday, and at the church on Saturday an hour before the service.
The family prefers memorials to the Greenleafton Reformed Church or Mayo Hospice.
