Preston considers workplace policy

City Administrator Joe Hoffman offered a draft of a respectful workplace policy to the city council at their March 5 meeting for their consideration. Mayor Kurt Reicks was absent.
Hoffman noted the city currently has some policies in place including a sexual harassment policy that had been adopted about 20 years ago. The new updated policy would be based on the League of Minnesota Cities model policy and would cover behaviors related to violence, offensive behavior, discrimination and sexual harassment.
City Attorney Dwight Luhmann didn’t recommend any changes, saying it looked good. Council members decided to wait until the next meeting to act on the policy giving them time to study the draft.
Access for School Parking Lot
The council approved a new access requested by the school district for a future parking lot located near the sports field. The 30 foot access will be constructed this year. The public works director and Hoffman had looked at the suggested location and recommended approval.
Other Business In Brief
•An annual contract between the city and Fillmore County for the ambulance service was approved. The county provides a subsidy of $4,500 to the service.
•The council approved a complimentary membership with the Rochester Area Builders as recommended by the EDA. With the membership, the Rochester Area Builders will advertise the city’s housing incentive program. There will be a link on their website for the Preston Housing incentives. There is no cost to the city.
•An authorization was approved to send a memorandum of support for the county’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED) initiative. The county is submitting a grant application to get AEDs in squad cars, county buildings, and if there is sufficient funding, into city buildings.
•Approval was given for Police Chief Matt Schultz to attend a conference for police chiefs at St. Cloud in April.
