Eli J. Burkholder, age 26, of rural Preston, Minn., passed away Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester after a logging accident.
Eli was born August 17, 1985, in Bowling Green, Missouri, the son of John and Verna (Schrock) Burkholder. He and his family moved to the Granger area in 1996. He was raised in the Amish community until 2007 when he left to make a living on his own. He married Effie Hochstetler on August 4, 2008, at the Greenleafton Reformed Church. They made their home in rural Preston.
Eli was a talented carpenter but could do anything you asked of him and he could do it well. His smile and genuine heart made him a friend to all he met. He enjoyed hunting, camping, four wheeling, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Effie; children, Matthew and Rosella both at home; his parents, Verna and John Burkholder of Harmony; brothers, Chris (Vera) of Lancaster, Wisc., Moses (Emma) of Cresco, Iowa; and Ivan (Mattie), Aaron, Jacob, and Alvin all of Harmony; sisters, Rosa (Phineas) Mast of Edgewood, Iowa; Sarah (Levi) Stutzman of Cresco, Iowa; Leah (Wilbur) Miller of Lancaster, Wisc.; and Eva (Eli) Gingerich and Wilma Burkholder, all of Harmony; many Hochstetler in-laws; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul.
The funeral was Monday, March 5, 2012, at the Greenleafton Reformed Church in rural Preston with Rev. Roger Lokker officiating. Burial was in the Greenleafton Cemetery. Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston handled arrangements.
