Preston hosts Fillmore County Fair

One week in the summer that Preston as well as other towns in our county look forward to is the fair. Those who visited the Fillmore County Fair this week were pleased to see the events they've held dear for years, such as the Arm Wrestling Tournament and the always popular Demolition Derby. The Grand Stand was alive with people each night as different events took place. One event I was lucky enough to attend was a concert new to the fair, Arch Allies. The group based out of the Twin Cities is comprised of men from all over the country. They are the ultimate tribute band. When you go to one of their concerts, you get a three-in-one deal. Each concert consists of three blocks of music. One dedicated to REO Speedwagon, one to Styx, and the always exciting Journey. The band goes through each set as lead singer Gabe Jacobs frontlines as the lead singers of these legendary bands, wigs and all.

Another highly popular event at the fair as always was the demolition derby. People from around the county filled the stands as they watched their favorite drivers ram into each other in hopes of slowing the others down. One particularly memorable event at the derby this year was when one car launched another and the car below was forced to drive around with his competitor stuck on top of him. Though you may not be able to hear very well afterward, and maybe got a little muddy, the demolition derby is always a fun time.

There were many other events at the fair that weren't part of the grand stand, but still should be mentioned. One included a sandwich eating contest, which I will admit was quite fun to watch. Also there was a children's pedal pull, and folks from Underwater Adventures in the Mall of America came down for a day and presented and underwater petting zoo. There were plenty of events for the whole family to enjoy. You also had the classic fair games as well as a few rides. Without these, any fair would be incomplete. It was enjoyable experience. You go watch rabbits being shown while eating a walking taco you got from the 4-H Food Stand. There were also many projects that were on display. These included photography, knitting, scrapbooks, and even bug collections. You name it and some kid probably showed it at the fair. There was always plenty to look at, games to play, food to eat, and an animal or two to pet. While mom and daughter check out the scrapbooks and clothing on display, father and son can look at the woodworking projects and hit the petting zoo to see the goats. There is always plenty to do at the fair. Even if you are not competing in an event, there is plenty to watch, plenty to eat, and much fun to be had by the whole family.
