Glen Curtis Raaen, age 79, of rural Lanesboro, Minn., died Thursday morning, February 2, 2012, at his farm home after a year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Glen was born October 23, 1931, in a log cabin near Peterson, Minn., the son of Gilmer and Cora (Fossom) Raaen. After attending country school he stayed home and farmed until he was drafted into the US Army in 1955. He was stationed in Korea for 15 months with the 3rd Infantry. Upon his return home in 1956 he resumed farming. On December 18, 1965, he married Helen J. Hongerholt at Grace Lutheran Church in Peterson. He has farmed for over 50 years, the majority of those years with his wife and later with his wife and sons.
Glen was a faithful member of Christ Lutheran Church in Preston for the past 43 years. He enjoyed participating in Sunday service and ushering each January for 35 years. He took pride in farming the land and milking dairy cows to earn a living. After he became ill in January 2011, he was forced to retire. He treasured his wife, children and grandchildren and enjoyed non-materialistic living. Glen also thought fondly of neighbors/friends and looked forward to visits with them.
Glen is survived by his wife, Helen J. Raaen; one daughter, Lisa (Lance) Armstrong of rural Lanesboro; two sons, Keith Raaen of rural Lanesboro and Kurt (Tracy) Raaen of Preston; grandchildren, Lane and Larissa Armstrong, Tyler, Taryn and Tori Raeen and Samantha Hermanson; two sisters, Donna (Milford) Olson of Peterson and Betty Livingood of Wykoff; one brother, LuVerne (Joyce) Raaen of Mabel; two aunts, Olive Peterson of Peterson and Christina Mickelson of Harmony; and twenty-eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Shirley (Ervin) Rye of Rushford.
The funeral was Saturday, February 4, 2012, at Christ Lutheran Church in Preston with Rev. Dave Jore officiating. Burial with military graveside rites was in the Hongerholt Cemetery in rural Peterson.
