Space Commando and other odd hobbies at DreamAcres Farm

The Dreamery Rural Arts Initiative on DreamAcres Farm welcomes David Harris and his one-man, acrobatic, autobiographical show “Space Commando and Other Odd Hobbies” on Friday, July 13 at 8:30pm. This is the second of three shows in the Play! in the Barn Series funded in part by a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council’s Legacy allocation from the Minnesota State Legislature. Tickets are $12 or “pay what you can.”
At the age of 14, David Harris knew exactly what he wanted to be, a professional yo-yo player. This dream led to a 20-year pursuit of odd hobbies; seemingly impossible stunts with folding chairs, shopping bag dancing, juggling feats, and inspired paddleball moves. Along this unexpected, hilarious, and often embarrassing journey, David finds amazing yo-yo masters, paddleball kings, and wedding rings. Also featured in the show is drummer Sam Mistry, a 15 year old student at the Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists and a resident of the Midway area of St. Paul.
David Harris has amazed and amused audiences with his physical comedy shows. Using a variety of unconventional props such as hand trucks, sheets of paper, bicycle wheels, and buckets, David blends acrobatics, comedy, and virtuosic object manipulation. He graduated from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks with a degree in English. David frequently performs in Minnesota at venues such as Dreamland Arts, The Red Eye, The Ritz Theater, Bryant Lake Bowl, and Jon Hassler Theater. He has performed at libraries, schools, fairs, corporate events, comedy clubs, variety shows, cabarets, and in dozens of theatrical productions. His shows include The David Harris Show (with magician David J. Harris), Everything Must Go (with Katie Kaufmann), Delivery Guy, The Paper Mover, BOOKcrobatics, and What I Want to Be When I Grow Up!
Friday nights at DreamAcres include wood-fired pizza from 5-8pm. Pizzas are made using the freshest seasonal vegetables on the farm, a sourdough crust, and Minnesota and Wisconsin cheeses. In addition to eating pizza, patrons, who are encouraged to bring their own table service and beverages (the farm holds no liquor license), are invited to take walks around the farm and to Deer Creek, to peruse goods from the farm’s Curiosity Shop (which sells a small selection of local items), and to take home breads, coffee and vegetables. Home-made ice cream and cookies are also sold.
The Dreamery Rural Arts Initiative is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting and expanding arts experiences in rural Fillmore County, and to making use of renewable/sustainable energy sources to do so.
