“Protest!” will showcase songs of the 1960s in this month’s “Over the Back Fence” Community Variety Show

A full cast singing “Marching Up To Freedom Land” a capella will open this month’s “Over the Back Fence” community variety show. “Protest!” is the theme, and the show will feature a variety of music and historical and cultural references from the 1960s. Also featured will be Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and Elvis Presley’s interpretation of that speech, “If I Can Dream,” sung by Rick Nance.

Host Damon Prestemon will welcome the Rutabaga Brothers onstage throughout the show, for numbers including “Times They are A-Changin’” (featuring soloist Nick Danielson) and the audience sing-along and show closer “We Shall Overcome.” Barbara Benson Keith and the Barbettes will sing “Sufferin Suffrage,” and Bob Petrillo will perform a song he was actually arrested for singing in the 1960s: “Eve of Destruction.”

In sponsor interviews, we’ll learn about Riverside on the Root Restaurant & Root River Outfitters, Church Hill School Condominiums, and Niagara Cave. Audience members are encouraged to sport their sixties apparel, including tie-dyed shirts and ribbon head bands. Come early! Pre-show music will begin at 7:10 p.m. with music by the Tuition Daddies.

In 2012, “Over the Back Fence” is running on the monthly format of 2nd Fridays February through November. Each show will also be broadcast on KFIL Radio 103.1FM at 7 p.m. on the Sunday nine days following each live show. Tickets are $7 for adults and for $4 students, in advance at the Lanesboro Arts Center, 507-467-2446 (open seven days a week), or at the St. Mane Theatre beginning at 6:30 p.m. on show nights. The St. Mane Theatre is handicapped accessible, located at 206 Parkway Ave N. in Lanesboro, Minn.
