Virgil Everett Kulsrud, 89, died Friday June 27, 2012, at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, where he had lived for the past eight months. He was born on March 20, 1922, in rural Lanesboro, attended area schools, and graduated from Preston High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific between 1945 and 1947.

On June 20, 1950, he married Muriel Evenson in Lanesboro. The couple lived in Lanesboro for 10 years, moved to rural Lanesboro in 1960 and lived there for 33 years, then lived in Preston until 2011. Mr. Kulsrud was a farmer.

Among some of his other jobs, he was a school-bus driver, worked for Standard Oil, worked at Lanesboro Lumber, was a can-milk hauler, worked at Allen’s grocery and locker, and sold Asgrow Seed. He was the janitor at Union Prairie Church for 20 years, was the church treasurer and a member of the church council. He also served on the cemetery board and was a member of the Lanesboro Creamery Board.

He enjoyed watching all kinds of sports, especially harness racing.

Mr. Kulsrud is survived by his wife; two daughters, Jeanette (Danny) Serfling of Preston, and Virginia Kulsrud of Rochester; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Klingsporn and Kathleen Barry, both of Rochester. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and five sisters.

The funeral for Virgil Kulsrud was Monday June 30, 2012, at Union Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro with the Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Burial was in Union Prairie Cemetery.

Arrangements were made by Riley Funeral Home.
