Does the Fillmore County Recycling Center accept clothing for recycling? Yes, we have for many years and continue to do so today. At one time, there was a large container near the fiber section of the recycling center where you could deposit unwanted clothing. Recently, this container has been removed and replaced by six smaller green plastic containers on wheels. They are located on the north side of the recycling center and to the left as you enter the building from the west. They are the property of the Salvation Army and are transported to Rochester when filled.
Items accepted by the Salvation Army for recycling include all kinds of clothing and accessories such as shoes, belts, and purses. Shoes should be wearable and not be torn or have holes in them. Gently used household items such as towels, sheets, linens, blankets, curtains, and throw rugs can also be donated as long as they are clean. The Salvation Army will accept all clothing and linens that are clean regardless of condition.
For many years, only certain articles of clothing were considered recyclable here in Fillmore County. However, in the past few months, things have changed, and a greater variety of articles can now be donated. If you do not make frequent trips to Preston, you can take your donations directly to the Salvation Army Store in Rochester that is located next to K-Mart just off Broadway across the street from the Olmsted Medical Clinic.
How much clothing is brought to the Recycling Center in Preston to be taken to Rochester? There have been many times that these six containers fill in less than a week. The recycling of clothing, bedding, and linens keeps all this material out of the landfill. These materials are not garbage to be disposed of and buried, but are recyclable items to be used again in one form or another.
