Ernest Higgins, 86, of Chatfield, formerly of Eyota, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield where he had resided the past year.
He was born May 16, 1913, in rural Stewartville. On March 21, 1936, he married Nina Nichols in Rochester. From 1963 until his retirement in 1976 he operated a greenway Co-op station and was the mechanic there. He formerly was a trucker hauling milk and livestock, and a salesman for several car dealerships. Mr. Higgins was a charter member of Grace Community Church and served on a number of church boards.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Duane (Carol) and Randy (Mavis), both of Rochester, and Le Roy (Mary) of Eyota; two daughters, Dolores (Jack) Rother and LaVonne (Richard) Skilestad, both of Eyota; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Olive Zieman of Wabasha and Bessie (Vernon) Nichos of Eyota. Seven brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
The funeral for Mr. Higgins was held Saturday, April 29, 2000 at Grace Community Church in Eyota with the Revs. James Barnhart and Mark Young co-officiating. Burial was in Oakgrove Cemetery in rural Eyota.
