To the Editor,
I am writing in concern of the zoning regulations in Fillmore County. We own almost 16 acres of wooded property, which is zoned agricultural. Our intention was to build on this land, however, cannot due to the “one non-farm house per 40 acre” rule. We talked to all of the neighbors and made application for a variance and the Board of Adjustment came to the land. They reviewed the property and regulations and denied our request. The day of the meeting, we were told we could apply for a subdivision and could build three houses on the property, however, could not build one house. We were told we could put a campground on the property, however, couldn’t live there to run it. Even though we intended on building a barn and having a few farm animals, we could not be classified as a farm. As a matter of fact, it was difficult to determine what a farm was -- 40 acres, 35 acres, 20 acres, and in many cases, some are less than this with more than one house on it. At a time when school districts are concerned about declining enrollment and counties are concerned about taxes, I find it difficult to understand why Fillmore County doesn’t wish to change the zoning ordinances to be more flexible and allow people to build. I understand they don’t want a house on every acre, however, it seems strange that I was almost encouraged to build a subdivision with three houses but not allowed to build just one. I understand from talking to several people, that this is and has been an issue for many people for quite some time. If you have a desire to lobby to change the zoning ordinance to one home per 5 acres or something similar, please join us at the Planning Commission meeting on Thursday, May 25th at the Fillmore County Office Building, lower level, (new office building across from the Sheriff’s office) at 7 PM.

The newly elected Lanesboro Art Council held its first meeting in April and decided one of our top priorities for this year will be to return Art in the Park to its original format. Mistakes have been made and for this we apologize. We are trying very hard to make things right. Art in the Park has always been a success because of the large number of people willing to spend time and effort to make it so. We now have many good committees at work. If you are asked to assist in any way, please make this year’s Art in the Park a success by saying, “YES”. We are planning additional food as well as a four hour jazz fest and other entertainment, demonstrations and a photo contest. More good crafters and artists are needed. If you have exhibited in the last five years you do not need to be juried, although we would appreciate 2 or 3 pictures (if you have them) to help with the placement of booths. Registrations will be accepted until June 12. Forms may be obtained by calling the Lanesboro Visitor’s Center (1-800-944-2670 or 467-2696) or Frank Wright, Lanesboro Art Council Secretary (507-467-3376, via e-mail at Fwright@means.net or LAC, Box 214, Lanesboro, MN 559). Art in the Park has always been a mix of good crafts and fine arts and that is the way we want to keep it. Please help us achieve this goal. The Art Council meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Lanesboro Tourism Center meeting room at 7:30 PM. Any interested persons are invited to attend.
