Mr. Finke, 80, of Chatfield, a retired co-owner of Ace Linoleum Shop in Rochester, died of lung cancer Wednesday, May 10, 2000 at his home.
Born October 9, 1919, at the family home in Cherry Grove, he attended Cherry Grove school through the eighth grade and then worked with his father on the farm and with a brother running a steam engine sawing lumber. A floor covering mechanic for many years, he began his career as an employee of Ace Linoleum Shop in Rochester and for 18 years before his retirement co-owned the business with Loren Bennett. On October 6, 1940, he married Audre Goldsworthy in Harmony. They lived in Memphis, TN, while he was a firefighter at the Memphis Navel Air Station during World War II and had also resided in Harmony, Cherry Grove and Rochester. His wife was office manager at Ace Linoleum until 1981 when they sold the business and retired. The couple had resided in the assisted living apartments at Chosen Valley Care Center since 1997. Interested in aviation all his life, he became a pilot as a young man, bought a share in Pietenpol Aircamper at age 19, later owned two aircraft and rented others. He enjoyed reading aviation books. He had traveled throughout the country and enjoyed attending family events and reading western novels.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Denny (Sherry) of LaGrange, OH; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Raymond of Chatfield; and a sister Bernice (Loyal) Brusse of Canton. Two brothers preceded him in death.
A memorial service for Mr. Finke was held Monday, May 15, 2000 in the chapel at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield with the Rev. Mark Radar officiating.
